TV Chef Caught Shoplifting

A celebrity chef, Antony Worrall Thompson, was arrested on Friday, January 6 on suspicion of theft. Thompson was reportedly stealing wine and cheese from a Tesco store in the noble riverside town of Henley-on-Thames, western London.

Commenting on condition of anonymity [for ethical grounds] a Thames Valley Police spokesman said there had been five separate offenses over the festive holidays which lead to his arrest on Friday. Thompson had shoplifted on several occasions by putting only some items through the scanner and walking out with the rest.

Sixty-year-old Thompson apologized on his website on December 6. He wrote:

"I am sorry for all my recent stupid and irresponsible actions; I am of course devastated for my family and friends, whom I've let down and will seek the treatment that is clearly needed. I am not the first, and certainly won't be the last, person to do something without rhyme or reason - what went through my head, only time will tell."

Thompson appeared on a daytime cookery show "Ready Steady Cook," where he also apologized for his misdeeds.

Thames Valley police issued him a formal caution, which stipulates that he will not face further charges but his details will remain on police files. A formal caution is issued only when a suspect admits guilt.

Medical experts say that shoplifting is a psychological problem that arises due to personal issues and conflicts not poverty or greed. It can therefore be treated with medication and therapy. The total value of the goods taken was £70.68.
