BJ's Stores Closed on Thanksgiving, Choosing to Live, Love and Give

After celebrating a day of being thankful for what we have in America, approximately 10 hours later eager shoppers ordinarily make a mad dash for department stores to get bargain-basement deals for the Christmas Season. But not all retailers will feed the frenzy.

 

225 million people shopped on Black Friday last year. 11.4 billion dollars were spent. While some retailers have even upped the ante to increase profit on this day of sales bonanza, others view it as trampling upon a holiday rooted in thankfulness and family togetherness.

 

Stores like Walmart, Best Buy and Toys ‘R’ Us have decided to open their doors early. Thanksgiving Day to be exact.

 

For Walmart, it’s 8 p.m. on Turkey Day and for Best Buy and Toys ‘R’ Us, it’s 6 and 5 p.m. respectively.

 

Several retail employees have begun circulating petitions to reverse what some view as sacrilege.

 

There are some stores, however, like BJs Wholesale Club who have taken a stand to stay closed for Thanksgiving, giving employees time to enjoy the holiday with their families.

 

"Maybe call me old-fashioned, but I feel that it's an easy decision to make [to stay closed on Thanksgiving]," Laura Sen, the CEO of BJs Wholesale Club, told The Huffington Post.

 

They will still take advantage of the biggest shopping day in American by opening stores on November 29 at 7 a.m.  In fact, they have staged a week long Black Friday Sale from Sunday, November 24 to Saturday, December 1.

 

What’s more, BJ’s Wholesale Club has partnered with Full 5 Media Group to benefit the crowdfunding campaign for the Live, Love and Give Holiday Drive in New York City.

 

Live events are staged on Sundays in Brooklyn, NY from December 1 to December 22  at Inkwells Jazz-Comedy Café, 1165 Bedford Avenue, where attendees will bring canned foods, coats, toys all while enjoying live entertainment.

 

Supporters who attend the event or donate $20 or more to the campaign will receive an automatic 60-day free membership at BJ’s Wholesale Club valued at $50
