Natural Hairnamix: 4 Hot Holiday Hairstyles for Naturals
December 10, 2014By Rossette Allen

The holiday season is upon us and for many, including myself, it is the most wonderful time of the year. From Thanksgiving to Christmas and, not to mention ringing in the New Year, there is just a certain air of excitement that comes about during this holiday season. It is the time of year when there are lots of things to do and places to go. It is a time to spend celebrating with friends and family, and the festivities can require you to bring your “A” Game in getting dolled up. Thanksgiving dinners, office parties, Christmas Banquets, family get-togethers, and New Year’s Balls are just a few of the holiday activities in which we may participate this season.

Getting fashion-ready for the holidays will certainly require appropriate hairstyles to complement each and every outfit. The truth is your hairstyle can either make or break your outfit; therefore, it has to be fabulous enough to complete the overall look. You may feel your natural hair may not look as elegant as you’d like. The real truth is that natural hair is so versatile and the possibilities for styling are almost limitless. Although there are many, I will touch on a few general styles that are achievable on most hair types and which are fairly easy to execute. The outcome of the styles will, however, vary depending on the length, texture and density of your hair.

Take a look at the following 4 hairstyles and you will be sure to find one that will suit your occasion during the holiday.

1. French Roll – This is, and has always been, a very versatile hairstyle which is suitable for different occasions and can be modified or transitioned by adding hair accessories. This is one of the simplest hairstyles as it involves only rolling and pinning the hair. The biggest concern would be to ensure that the hair is stretched prior to styling to ensure that it is smooth, sleek and neatly pinned in place. Variations to the style can be done to suit your personal taste. It can be done by shaping the front in a mound or hump of some sort, a bang, or with just loose, cascading curls to one side.

Whether you are attending a fancy, formal event or any occasion where you wish to look a little more dressed up to attend, this style will add the wow factor you need for the holiday.

2. Elegant French Braid – The reality about this time of year is that there is always a lot to do and very little time. Normal life and its responsibilities do not pause during the holiday season and so in addition to the usual day to day obligations, time has to be made to accomplish all the plans and preparation during this season. It can become overwhelming, especially if you have a full-time job and a family.  In order to accomplish all the tasks at hand, you may have to keep things simple.

One option that looks amazingly elegant that you can achieve in under 10 minutes is certainly a French Braid. It is one of those styles that can easily transition from casual to formal with just a little tweaking. Some may doubt its appropriateness for a formal occasion but it indeed has a Victorian flare to it, making it very appropriate for such a setting. The style has become popular both on the runway and the red carpet.

The Fishbone braid, which is now trending, is certainly a great choice and one that will be sure to turn some heads. If your natural hair is not long enough to pull off this style some braiding hair can always be added to give it the look and the length that is desired.

3. Classy Bun – This is one of those hairdos that is simple enough for most people to create and it is achievable in only a matter of minutes. The Bun is one of those easy updo hairstyles that is suitable for different occasions and can be easily transitioned from casual to formal if you are going from work to an after-work reception.

Creating a Bun is as simple as pulling the hair in a ponytail and then folding and pinning it under. There are many variations of Buns, although traditionally it has a flat, round, doughnut-like shape. They don’t, however, have to take on those specifications to be considered a Bun. For example, some Buns are created by wrapping the hair around itself neatly then pinning. In the case of a messy Bun, the hair is just loosely and randomly pinned to create an effortless, more edgy hairstyle.

If the holiday season finds you running about preparing for the festivities, this hairstyle is one that you should consider because not only is it time efficient to install, but it also requires very little maintenance.

4. Spiral Curls - Most women love the flattering look of a bouncy head of spiral curls. For naturals, curly natural hairstyles are usually a welcomed change from the normal twist, braided or afro hairstyles. For the average Jane, it is not a hairstyle that is typically worn on a daily basis but is usually reserved for special events or occasions.

This may be due to the fact that it is a little time-consuming to achieve, especially if the curls are created using flexi rods or perm rods. There are alternate ways to get nice spirals curls, for example, by a Bantu Knot Out or with Curlformers.

Spiral Curls are great for a special holiday look and can be modified into many hairstyles like an updo or even a messy bun when the style gets old.

The holiday season is a special time of year, usually buzzing with events and activities that may require you to do something a little different with your hair. There are many more styling options for naturals. Have fun creating styles that suit your budget, time and personal taste.

Happy Holidays!
