Teacher Fakes Cancer to Skip School
July 24, 2010By Sarah Richardson

Pennsylvania police have arrested a special education teacher after they found out she had been lying for more than a decade about her medical history.

Three time nominee for Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year, Leslie Herneisey, 51, lied about having tumors and cancer for over 10 years so that she could skip out on work.

Herneisey asked for 8 weeks off while she supposedly underwent chemotherapy for an inoperable brain tumor. At first Herneisey's co-workers were supportive, submitting an application for the Make-a-Wish foundation and then when this was rejected (over questions about her medical record), her co-workers raised money so that Herneisey could take a free trip to Disney World.

Suspicions rose when the medical documents she submitted lacked official letterhead. It was also determined that the doctor's signature was in fact a fake.

Herneisey was arrested last week and charged with 12 felony counts of forgery.
