Kim Burrell's Gay Sermon Crisis
January 19, 2017By Billy Delgado

So, Gospel singer Kim Burrell came under fire for her comments on homosexuality.

I’m late to the Kim Burrell persecution party. Apparently, the Gospel singer’s sermon on perversions included homosexuality and caused a lot of backlash and hate, resulting in her being excluded from different music industry events and cancelled appearances.

As I look at the list of backlashers, I’m left wondering: what did they expect from a Gospel singer?

Scheduled to sing “I see the victory” on the Ellen DeGeneres show? Cancelled. Radio shows? Gone. Pharrell Williams? He took the escape hatch and pulled out the “hate speech” card. Janelle Monae’s hair said it is “pro-love,” implying Burrell is pro-hate and “part of the problem." Frank Ocean’s mama wants to somehow extract Burrell’s vocals from her son’s music. Appearance at the BMI Trailblazers Gospel Music award show (of all places)? Bye-bye.

Why? Because she said homosexuality is “perverted." I don’t know what these celebrities were expecting a professing Christian singer to say on the subject. I don’t know how people who were raised in church yet have compromised in this area are still surprised that, yes, Christians today still believe in what God says on a matter in both the Old and New Testament. It feels like Burrell was set up like the Oregon bakery that refused to bake a gay cake. I mean, she is a GOSPEL SINGER. She sings about Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is in the New Testament where a number of activities are decreed immoral. And you’re shocked that Burrell concurs with this?

In context, Burrell was aiming her sermon towards the believers within her congregation. Not Ellen DeGeneres. Not Pharell. Not Janelle Monae’s hair. Not anybody outside of Love & Liberty Fellowship Pentecostal Overcoming Holy Church (Wow. Even in acronyms, that’s a long name). Biblically speaking, we as Christians are not in the business of correcting society. We can expose dark deeds in society (Ephesians 5:11) and stand for righteousness in a lawless land but it’s not our job to change behavior. It’s our job to preach the Gospel and make disciples.

To no surprise of my own, even some within the “Church” criticized Burrell’s choice of words, when she describes the sin as a spiritual condition. Scripturally speaking, there is a spirit realm we are at war with (Ephesians 6:12) and there are battles for and in our minds that we can triumph over (2 Corinthians 10:4). Sin is a spiritual condition that requires a spiritual remedy. You do not have to believe this. You can think me bat-poop crazy as I’ve been called but it comes with the territory of faith.

Would I have been as “rough” as Burrell in her sermon? I don’t know. It depends. Scripture speaks of ex-communicating brethren that are involved in a sinful lifestyle, be it swindling, drunkenness, sexual immorality, if that person has no intention of changing. The bible says don’t even go to lunch with such a so-called brother in Christ (1 Corinthians 5:11). Maybe she was fed up with the tolerant attitude in her church. That falls in line with the heart of God; righteous indignation. Jezebel needs to leave the House of God. Tolerance of unclean spirits within the Body Of Christ can have such a negative effect on a congregation which is another article. They need to be cast out and those affected by them need to be counseled in love. The LBGT community (rife with hostile spirits) needs to grow up and understand that disagreeing with you is not the same as hate. This is VERY easy to understand if you have children. Just because you tell your child right from wrong does not mean you stopped loving them. See?

It should be the norm when a Christian says homosexuality is on the same perversion boat as adultery, pornography, incest, pedophilia, fornication, etc, etc. Sin is sin and the wages of sin is death. Period. It’s not easy to say this as a Christian. Trust me, it would be much easier to say homosexuality is not a sin and not lose friends and family over the matter. It is easy to just say anything goes. It’s heart breaking when those that cry for tolerance cannot tolerate your spiritual stance on a matter, confusing your stance for hate, and unfriending you on Facebook or rebuking you as a family member. It hurts but I cannot go against what God has clearly stated. And it’s disturbing when professing Christians do not side with you on what is so biblically obvious. Either the Bible is true in what it teaches or I can throw it in the garbage. Either my conversion and experience was real or I’m delusional. So call me whatever you want. Burrell, in all her Pentecostal passion is standing up for something she knows can and has resulted in being less popular.

When it comes to any truth-speaking, you will always get backlash (2 Timothy 3:12). In our 1st Amendment country, If we can do something about the backlash to be vindicated or unscathed, then by all means exercise your rights. If not, then consider the persecution a blessing and privilege in the eyes of the Lord (Acts 16:25). The backlash is not against Kim but against HIM (Matthew 10:22). Consider it joy and sing His praises.

Her haters pointed out her obesity as hypocrisy in sinful living (i.e. gluttony), well then I say this is the case of the speck being in her eye and the log being in her hater’s eyes. See, people like to use the Lord Jesus' parable in Matthew 7:4-5 as a rebuttal to say that "You got sins so don't talk about mine" when that is NOT the nature of the parable. Pay careful attention. The Lord said:

"How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Both parties have something in their eyes. The Hypocrite has a log in his eye while the brother he is correcting has the speck. So is gluttony a “log” compared to sexual immorality being the "speck". I'm going to guess that addiction to pizza is far different than addiction to immoral sex. There is just no comparison. So to me, Kim has the "speck" while those she is speaking about has the "Log". I hope I didn't make you cross-eyed by now with specks & logs. But calling her out for being overweight as a means to justify homosexuality within the church is just…Sigh…Besides, can anybody confirm with certainty that Kim Burrell is not on weight watchers or trying to sign up with Planet Fitness?

Society has been thin-skinned since creation. Nothing new. If what Burrell said was biblical then we should stand behind her and rejoice in the backlash. If she spoke from the Spirit, then the Lord will prepare a table for her in the presence of her enemies (Psalm 23:5).

Hopefully, then He may tell her to sing “I see the victory” before the presence of her enemies.
